Solution #1: Measuring a ring they already wear on their ring finger.

The easiest way to determine your fiancée-to-be’s ring size is to furtively “borrow" a ring they already wear on their engagement ring finger and take it to any high street jeweller and ask them to size it for you.

Every jeweller has a ring sizing stick (known as a mandrel) that they can use to determine the correct ring size and it takes about thirty seconds to do - so they will normally be more than happy to assist with your proposal!

Solution #2: Measuring a ring they wear on the ring finger of their opposite hand.

Some people don't like to wear a ring on their ring finger before they are engaged - and if this is the case, repeat Solution #1 but "borrow" a ring they wear on the ring finger of their opposite hand.

Now comes a bit of Sherlock Holmes style deduction. Is your partner left or right handed?

Normally, a ring will be one size larger on the ring finger of the dominant hand (the hand they use most).

For example, in the UK most people wear their engagement ring on their left hand ring finger.

If you measured a ring worn by your fiancée-to-be from their right hand ring finger and they are right handed – then their engagement ring (worn on the left hand) will probably be one size smaller.

Likewise, if they are left handed and will be wearing their engagement on that hand, it may be wise to order one size larger than the ring worn on their right hand ring finger that you measured.

Although this method isn’t foolproof, it should certainly get you close to the correct fit.

Should your measurements be a little off – please don’t worry, Julia offers a complimentary resize for many of her rings should your fiancée need her ring adjusted.

Solution #3: Asking family and friends for help.

If you are really not sure of your fiancée-to-be’s ring size, your beloved’s friends and family could be a great source of assistance. They may be better placed to obtain the correct engagement ring size without raising suspicion, so if you can enlist their help, take advantage of it!

Although there are a number of downloadable ring sizer templates available online, it can be quite difficult to gain more than a rough estimate of ring size, so would suggest not relying on this option.

If you’re still unsure, the only thing I would recommend is to err on the side of caution and order a slightly larger ring size, so the ring will at least slip on to their finger when you propose. There’s nothing more upsetting or embarrassing than a ring that simply won’t go on – particularly when you’re down on one knee!
